Super Nintendo was my introduction to video games. I asked for a "Nintendo" for my 5th birthday. Video games had somehow entered my brain through cultural osmosis. I was influenced by the Muppet Babies episode "It's Only Pretendo". Actually, after rewatching it, I'm 100% sure it's the sole reason I asked for video games. I recommend checking that one out, it's awesome, but that's a story for another day.
So I got my SNES in 1993 along with Super Mario World. I remember sitting with my mom and brother, reading the game manual, and trying to learn how to play. We understood that you press B to jump, and use the control pad to move, but for some reason, we didn't ever try using both at the same time. Eventually my mom discovered you could jump while moving, but she initially said you needed to press left and right at the same time, which of course is impossible! Well, we eventually figured everything out, and I was already in love with my favorite past time.
For a long time, Super Mario World was the only game I had, but when Christmas rolled around, more games was my big ask from Santa. There was one problem though. As a mere kindergartener, I had no idea what games I might want. I was only aware that there was a much bigger world out there to explore!
So, my mom chose a selection of titles to jump start my collection. I've always assumed she chose games from the bargain bin, but I wonder if she got input from a store employee of anything like that because looking back, it was actually a nice little library that I was set up with. I should ask her if she remembers...
Here are the games I got:
